Check out Order of the Owl, sludge metal from Atlanta. Saw them about a month ago in Allston, MA. Dudes used to be part of Zoroaster. The killed it. The rigs were monstrous. Guitar played through Orange, Green, and Matamp heads and three orange cabinets. Bass played through an Orange and old SUNN solid state and tall ampeg cabinets. My teeth were shaken loose from my gums and it was awesome.

But seriously check them out, I think they are still a little raw but will certainly be rock solid very soon.

So my friend Greg and I listened to this album twice last night. I was skeptical because I had seen the theatrical stage presence of Ghost before and was not impressed. He convinced me to give them a second listen and I’m glad I did.

Ghost is old fashioned metal, campy straight forward satanic lyrics (which are laughable at times) and over-the-top stage presence. Listening to them is like watching a rockin’ 1970s B-horror movie; and its entertaining as hell. Hmm I guess that’s appropriate. HA!

The West Wing L.A.:

Being a lonely Ravens fan in the greater Boston area I’ve started to search for others up here in New England. That said I’ve found a few people and am looking for more and was encouraged to see other gangs of Ravens fans across the country - most notably the West Wing L.A. This group started with 10 people three years ago and has grown to more than 300. Each week they take over a bar in Los Angeles and go nuts during Ravens games.

Now, I am trying to launch - New WingLand - in order to have a posse to watch games with while I am away from Baltimore. I’m posting stuff on craigslist and other sites if I can find them get this thing rolling. If anyone knows other folks in the area who want in on this send them my way.

I was just browsing the internet for bands we’ve listened to, which allowed my mind to wander to the absolutely incredible weekends spent in Youngstown, OH at the end of each May. I’m sad I only went three times, but am proud that I went along with some of my best friends each year.

Incredible memories that I barely remember.

May, i suppose wasn’t a total wash. Near the beginning of the month on one of my days off, while not feeling so bad I started a batch of IPA, which is now bottle conditioning and about ready to taste. Two weeks ago, just before being relegated to the sofa to rest my feet, I cooked up the wort for a summer-time wheat beer/ hefeweizen. I’m about to bottle this next batch and am able, with Sara’s help, to do it while sitting.

My recently aggressive beer production sent me to thinking and I found that the name that came to mind for my brews was Old Soup. While I won’t be selling or marketing these beers, I decided to give it a name. After mentioning it to Sara, she made me a logo.

More beers to come this year…

I woke up May 1st with a little back pain, and a funny burning in my right big toe. The joint pain increased over the next couple of days. The doc thought I had gout. Tests come back - no gout. I get some anti-inflammatory pills and some pain killers, an appointment with the podiatrist and continue to pound away on my feet in my busy restaurant job 8 to 10 hours a day 6 and 7 days a week for a few weeks (we were short staffed). The pain became overwhelming, especially now in my left ankle (opposite foot) because I was relying on it so much while limping on the right - so I munched more pain pills and got through it. Finally get to the podiatrist last week - this doc thinks its gout - puts my left foot (ankle) in a boot and gives me gout meds for the right. No change - no gout as it turns out. Then I get put on steroids and put out of work for the forseeable future - which help the swelling in the left ankle which had been essentially severely sprained.

Now - a month on, left foot in a boot, ankle still not fixed, left big toe in some pain now, right big toe in pain but manageable, out of work, bored as hell, depressed, and my back hurts from top to bottom because I’ve bin hobbling for 30+ days.

Boo hoo. Sorry to bitch, just getting it off my chest and keeping everybody updated, if anyone still checks this page.

Last night at work, I saw this small four legged figure trot pass one of our floor to ceiling windows. Knowing the last of these was window panes was opened wide like a door I tried to beat it there and shut the door/window. Didn’t work. I was face to face with a land fish - the Opossum! I stomped and shouted and headed it off at every turn eventually getting the marsupial to run back out the door. Turning back to the restaurant, I was greeted with a stunned silence followed by cheers and laughter.

They are throwing me a hero’s parade this evening and I’ll be getting the keys to the city from the mayor at a ribbon cutting ceremony of the bronze statue they erected of me.

This is my walk to work, though lately its been a drive since my foot and back are messed up. None the less its usually a 15 min walk passed some odd scenes. Chief among them is the abandoned house next door that has been empty for a few years since the two 100+ year old women who occupied it croaked. Between the debris in that back yard and the crazy women next door, all 15 stray cats have plenty of food and shelter. I will follow in Blocher’s footsteps and name them soon.

Sara and I were down in Philly and Wilmington for the weekend a couple weeks ago. We had all day to drive back to Mass and took our time. Just off the Palisades Parkway there are a number of rest areas and scenic overlooks. I think this picture can show you how easily we forget the interconnectedness of man’s built world and nature. In the photo, I’m standing on a cliff (easily 150ft high shear rock wall) behind me is essentially wilderness, below me the mighty Hudson river, and in the distance the behemoth that is New York City. NYC has its charm, but I think the real New York lies just north of its Big Apple borders.

Little did I know we lived a twenty-minute drive to the ocean. Its an awkward bastion of filth and confusion, especially the popularity of a local roast beef stand. The locals say its “wicked awesome”; I have my doubts. But hey, its the beach and I’m sure once the summer hits we’ll be there on the regular. I mean the chances of a communicable disease surviving on the tip of a hypodermic needle have to be low - RIGHT?

Not sure if you can see what I’m looking at in the second photo, but there were crazy MF-ers out there kite surfing in 40 degree (F) water. Impressive.

So, I landed a bar tending gig at a place called Posto. It’s got a lot going for it: I can walk to it in 15 minutes, it serves expensive food/drink (=$ for me), and it provides me with a steady supply of kick ass pizza. So, until things brighten on the “real job” front; I’ll be there slinging drinks to a mailman and George Wendt’s doppelganger.

You know, I thought since I’ve held out on joining facebook for almost purely contrarian reasons I would keep a correspondence with friends back home by way of a semi-regular journal of benign commentary and pictures of me drunk. Now that Bebop and Rocksteady have there own blogs, it kinda loses the charm.

I admittedly own a poorly made electric guitar. Years ago, upon recommendations and positive reviews I purchased a Jay Turser JT-50. This is their “SG” style guitar.

It’s a reasonable looking guitar, especially for a mediocre player like myself. I, however, rarely played this guitar and sadly it still failed. Essentially the electronics in it are junk; poorly soldered cheap parts inside cheap wood. I need to replace everything in there especially the input jack (easy enough). I am also planning to replace the bridge pickup.

Right now I have a few front-runners.

1.) Gibson Tony Iommi Signature Humbucker.

(I generally would avoid any “signature series” but have read some good things about it. Convince me why I shouldn’t)

2.) Suhr SSH+

3.) Seymour Duncan SH-5 Custom

Someone give me some guidance or suggestions.
