So today is opening day for the Orioles, though we all know the REAL opening day, at Camden Yards, isn’t until Monday. It’s a bit depressing being unemployed, 3” deep in springtime snow in Boston, and Opening Day is about to happen down in Baltimore.
Nonetheless, the Orioles made some exciting if questionable off season moves to possibly get this boat turned around. Vlad Guerrero, great but at the very tail end of his career; Derek Lee, great but coming off serious injuries and so-so seasons; Hardy and Reynolds, hot and cold and Reynolds is the all-time strike out king. I think that all anybody wants is a team that wins at least one more game than it loses this year. And for a franchise that’s had 13 consecutive losing seasons, it would be a sizable improvement. Life in the A.L. East is a tough road to hoe. Arguably 3+ of the top 10 teams in MLB are in the A.L. East (NYY, BOS, TB, maybe TOR). So that leaves the O’s shit outta luck, but without an excuse for not finishing above .500.
